Selections for Saturday 10th of June 2023

1.50 Haydock

2 points each way Mr Wagyu (3/1 Skybet/ William Hill, 5 places)

Mr Wagyu finished third last week at Epsom and was beaten by two horses ridden off the pace. He drops back to Grade 3 company today and should again go close from the front. There shouldn’t be as much pace in this and he could get things his own way up front. Normally you would be worried about such a quick turnaround but his record when turned out under 7 days in June and July is 6 wins from 7 runs. He likes Haydock and has won twice here. He should take all the beating in this.

1 point each way Silver Samurai (8/1 Skybet/ William Hill, 5 places or else 15/2 Betway, 5 places)

With firms paying 5 places each way I felt that last year’s winner Silver Samurai was worth a small bet. If there is loads of pace which I don’t think there will, it will really suit Silver Samurai coming off the pace. He won this race last year off a mark of 92 and is now back to a mark of 95. He is drawn in stall 14 and I am hoping that Mr Wagyu drawn in stall 11 can give him a good toe into the race. The cheek pieces are applied for the first time and might just get him to travel that bit sweeter through the first half of the race.

2.25 Haydock

1 point each way Get Shirty (5/1 Skybet/ Paddy power/ Unibet, 4 places)

Get Shirty drops back to handicap company for the first time since finishing second in Meydan 1 length behind First Ruler. He won over course and distance last July off a mark of 105 albeit on soft ground. He has plenty of form on good and good/ firm ground so that wouldn’t concern me. He is 2lbs higher today on a rating of 107 and will need a strong pace to be seen at his best. Still nothing really stands out in this and he can put up a bold show carrying top weight.

3.00 Haydock

1 point each way Nachtrose (17/2 Skybet, 3 places or else 10/1 Bet365, 2 places)

It’s hard to understand the strength of the form of Nachtrose but she could be very much underestimated at 10/1 with skybet paying 3 places. She is a German trained filly who won the Group 2 Italian Oaks and was second in a Group 2 in Germany over 2 miles last month. She has a beautiful pedigree by Australia out of Night Of Magic who was a Group 2 winner herself. Mimikyu looks the most likely winner but has to carry a 5lbs penalty. Modaara is priced more on potential than what she has actually achieved and Time Lock travels like the winner through all her races but has three seconds beside her name.

3.35 Haydock

1 point each way The Astrologist (3/1 William Hill/ Betvictor, 2 places)

The Astrologist disappointed on his British debut at York finishing seventh of ten runners in a Group 2 over 6 furlongs. Before that he finished second in a Group 1 in Meydan over 6 furlongs on good ground. He has an official rating of 115 and if he can run to near that mark he should win this. I would imagine he needed that run at York and should take a significant step forward on route to Ascot. The step up to 7 furlongs shouldn’t be a problem as he won a Group 3 in December over that trip. He does carry a 3 lbs penalty for that win but still should go very close in this under Ryan Moore.

2.40 Beverley

2 points each way Ugo Gregory (3/1 Bet365/ Betvictor/ Coral/ Boylesports, 3 places)

Ugo Gregory is very well handicapped on past form and loves it at Beverley. He has run here 11 times and has won 3 times, finished second twice and third once. He was desperately unlucky here on his latest run leading the whole race and just beaten on the nod in the finish. He has been raised 3 lbs for that effort but a similar effort could be good enough to win this, he can get his own way out in front and hopefully hang on to get a well deserved win for connections.
