Selections for Thursday 12th of September 2024
1.50 Doncaster
1 point each way Eartha (9/1 Generally, 5 places)
A wide open competitive nursery to kick the Ledger meeting off and I like the look of the Richard Fahey trained Eartha. She was second on her debut at Thirsk before getting the job done on her second run at Wetherby. She was then given an 84 day break before finishing third in a blanket finish on her return at Southwell last month. She wasn’t given a hard race on that occasion and this looked to have been the plan, she should improve for that run and the extra furlong and a half could be ideal. She is related to winners that have stayed further and the trip shouldn’t be a problem.
2.25 Doncaster
1 point each way King Of Bears (9/1 Generally, 4 places)
I would imagine King Of Bears will be ridden with more restraint today and the jockey booking of Jamie Spencer would strengthen those claims. He was too keen out front in the Sussex at Glorious Goodwood, fading into seventh during the final furlong, beaten 3 lengths. He won at Newbury in good style on his penultimate start and this bigger field will help him get cover that can help him settle. The application of a first time tongue tie will also aid jockey Jamie Spencer who is renowned for getting free running horses to settle off the pace. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was too reverse placings with Intrusively who finished third in that Goodwood race and he is 11/2 here.
3.00 Doncaster
1 point each way Anshoda (9/1 Generally, 3 places)
Anshoda is officially joint top rated in this race and is still underestimated in the market at 9/1. She won the Group 3 Prestige Stakes on soft ground at Goodwood on her last run and last year’s winner Darnation followed the same path. Anshoda won her maiden on good to firm ground so I wouldn’t pigeon hole her as being ground dependent but she is progressive and improving with racing. The step up to a mile will suit her and I wouldn’t be surprised if she produced a career high today which would entitle her to be there abouts.
4.10 Doncaster
1 point each way Harpers Ferry (4/1 Betfred, 4 places or else 4/1 Generally, 3 places)
Harpers Ferry is bred to be a Derby horse and that was the ambition earlier in the year. He is by a French Derby winner out of an Oaks winner but has been a bit coltish at stages and has been gelded to help him concentrate on his racing. He was eight on his last run in the Group 2 King Edward but outran his odds for most of the race before fading late on. A handicap mark of 93 looks fair and a drop back to 1m 2f looks likely to suit as he looked a non-stayer at 1m 4f on his last run.
