On better ground I would be more positive of the Richard Fahey trained Dark Vintage but I still want to have a small bet on him at the prices. I have been waiting for him to step up to 6 furlongs after he kept on strongly to finish sixth at big odds in a 5 furlong handicap at Royal Ascot. He has no form line on ground this soft but at least his dam recorded her only win on soft ground and his half-brother Kerdos handled soft ground also. Stable jockey Oisin Orr takes the ride over the better fancied stablemate Tropical Island.
1 point each way Sergeant Wilko (9/1 Bet365, 5 places or else 17/2 Betvictor, 5 places)
Sergeant Wilko is showing better form this season after winning on his seasonal debut at Newcastle over 6 furlongs. He was fourth of eight at Thirsk over 5 furlongs on his next start but won again on his last run at Leicester when stepped back up to 6 furlongs. That was on good to soft ground off a mark of 84. The handicapper has given him 3 lbs for that win. He is well drawn in stall 9 today and I like the fact that he is a front runner. He has shown he can handle the softer ground conditions and has a good attitude for a battle as he showed at Leicester. They might find him hard to pass on this ground.
