Selections for Wednesday 31st of July 2024

1.50 Goodwood

1 point each way Crown Of India (16/1 Generally, 4 places)

Crown Of India has yet to win a race but he has shown signs in defeat that he could be well handicapped off a mark of 81. He finished third to the re-opposing Master Builder and Subsequent in a Novices race at Salisbury over 1m 2f. He was only ¾ of a length behind the winner off level weights and has a weight advantage with both of those opponents today. The hood was tried on his last run but trainer Ed Walker felt it took away from his finishing kick and has opted to leave it off today. Ed Walker is five from twenty one with his handicap debutants so far this year.

2.25 Goodwood

1 point each way Fair Angellica (11/2 Paddy power/ Betfair/ Skybet, 4 places)

Fair Angellica is now a non runner.

6.00 Galway

1 point each way She’s A Fine Wine (11/2 Bet365, 5 places or 5/1 Generally, 5 places)

Peter Fahey has a good recent record in this race having won the last two renewals. However I like the chances of the Henry De Bromhead trained She’s A Fine Wine. She has won a Bumper for her old trainer Olly Murphy and a maiden Hurdle for her current trainer Henry De Brohead. She was given a mark of 114 for her handicap debut at Ballinrobe where she won. The handicapper has raised her 6 lbs for that win but she is still very much unexposed and a 6 lbs rise looks fair.

7.10 Galway

1 point each way Perceval Legallois (5/1 Generally, 6 places)

Usually I would never back a horse at 5/1 for a race this competitive but it is hard to see Perceval Legallois out of the places with a clear round of jumping. He fell at the final fence at Leopardstown on his penultimate start when challenging Heart Wood who went on to win the race by 14 lengths. We don’t know if he would have won that finish but he would have gone close. The handicapper nudged him up 2 lbs for that run and he looked to have his latest race won when kicking for home at Punchestown. However the Barry Connell trained Hgranca De Thaix stayed on strongly to beat him by 4 lengths with the third a further 11 lengths back. The handicapper has raised him 5 lbs again but he is due a win in one of these big handicaps and is sure to be primed for today. He is a worthy favourite.

8.15 Galway

1 point each way Jabbar (7/1 Skybet, 6 places or else 7/1 Generally, 5 places)

Jabbar is a non runner.
