Selections for Saturday 18th of May 2024

2.25 Newbury

1 point each way Relief Rally (7/2 Bet365/ William Hill/ Coral, 4 places)

Relief Rally has some solid Juvenile form and will be suited by going back to ^ furlongs. Her form figures over 5 and 6 furlongs are 11211. She won the Super Sprint here at Newbury over 5 furlongs and the Lowther at York over 6 furlongs. She just failed to get past Crimson Advocate in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot over 5 furlongs. She tried 7 furlongs on her seasonal reappearance and either didn’t properly see it out or needed the run fitness wise. Back at 6 furlongs she should go well and she gets a couple of pounds off her main market rivals with her sex allowance.

3.00 Newbury

1 point each way King’s Gambit (9/2 Skybet, 5 places or else 9/2 Generally, 4 places)

The Charltons have a good record in this race having won it three times in the past decade. They seem to have a genuine contender this year with King’s Gambit. He has raced exclusively here at Newbury and has improved with each run. He won over 1 mile on good to soft when seemingly unfancied at 33/1 and followed that up with a good second again over 1 mile just failing to catch Bracken’s Laugh (now rated 108). King’s Gambit was also carrying a 6 lbs winning penalty that day. The extra 2 furlongs look well within his grasp and he should go close.

2.40 Newmarket

1 point each way Darkness (15/2 Generally, 4 places)

Darkness is back on a handicap mark of 87 after a couple of poor efforts. That leaves him 4 lbs lower than when winning here on the July course last summer. He ran well for a long way last week over 1 mile and the drop back to 7 furlongs looks like a positive. He handles most ground conditions so won’t mind if the rain arrives and is well drawn in stall 12 close to the first three in the market.

½  point each way Imperial Fighter (40/1 Coral, 4 places or else 33/1 Generally, 4 places)

We’ll have a minimum bet on Imperial Fighter for the Osborne team. He hasn’t won since his racecourse introduction at Goodwood back in 2021. That was over 7 furlongs on soft ground but he has been highly tried by his past trainer Andrew Balding. He has run in the Irish 2000 Guineas and the French Derby. He had a career high mark of 110 and is now 97. A change of yard might just spark him back to form and if it does he is well handicapped to be competitive here at a big price. Drawn 15 he is also around more fancied horses and should get a lovely pace to aim at.
