Selections for Saturday 6th of September 2024

1.50 Haydock

2 points Win Master Builder (5/2 Generally)

Master Builder has only ran four times so far in his career but he left a strong impression on his last run that he is a well handicapped horse finishing third in the Melrose Handicap. That race has proven to be a strong handicap for three year olds in the past. The handicapper has nudged him up a further 3 lbs for that debut handicap third of sixteen but that is a strong piece of form and he should go close off a mark of 88.

2.25 Haydock

1 point each way Oneforthegutter (8/1 Betvictor/ Ladbrokes/ Boylesports/ Coral, 4 places)

Oneforthegutter was a good third on his latest run in the Ebor at York over 1m 6f. He was just ahead of the re-opposing Epic Poet on that occasion and he could prove a danger again today. The handicapper has raised him just 1 lb for that effort and Ryan Moore is in the saddle to ride him for the first time. His only run at Haydock was back in 2021 where he won a maiden here. He has been running consistently well without getting his head in front this summer and with a top judge on board hopefully he will get the job done today.

1 point each way Waxing Gibbous (6/1 Paddy power/ Betfair, 5 places)

Waxing Gibbous sneaks in here at the foot of the weights with Hollie Doyle onboard. So far this year she has finished second at Doncaster over 1m 4f on soft ground. Won at Newbury again over 1m 4f on good ground and was just beaten over 1m 3f on her last run at Kempton over 1m 3f. She steps up to 1m 6f for the first time here but she is very much unexposed and a mark of 81 could still underestimate her.

3.00 Haydock

1 point each way American Affair (5/1 Bet365, 4 places or else 9/2 Skybet, 4 places)

American Affair has been progressive this season and has improved 22 lbs so far this season. He finished second on his latest run at Pontefract over 5 furlongs off today’s mark and was second over course and distance on his penultimate start off a mark of 88. 5 lbs claimer Amie Waugh takes over from Paul Mulrennan and there is every chance he can get back to winning ways here.

3.35 Haydock

1 point each way Shouldvebeenaring (12/1 Paddy power/ William Hill, 4 places)

Shouldvebeenaring was a neck second in this race last season behind Regional. This has been the target all year for connections and it is his best chance of going close in a Group 1. His favourite tracks are here and Longchamp and he sees 6 furlongs out strongly. This strongly run 6 furlongs will suit him and he is well drawn in stall 14. He looks underestimated at 12/1 and if the fancied three year olds at the top of the market underperform it is between Shouldvebeenaring and Swingalong to take advantage.

2.10 Ascot

1 point each way Poniros (9/1 Betfred, 4 places or else 8/1 Bet365, 4 places)

Poniros holds plenty of ability but has been far to free throughout his last two runs at Newmarket and Royal Ascot. The combination of a first time hood and a gelding operation might help the cause and if he can get back to the form shown on his handicap debut at Newbury he will be bang there at the finish. On that occasion he was second behind King’s Gambit who went on to finish second in a Group 2 at York ½ a length behind Alflaila.
